Scarlett's First Month

Scarlett got to celebrate her first Christmas at only two days old! We went to our family's houses on Christmas Eve and again on Christmas Day. Silas had a blast and the rest of us....well, we made it! Ha! I was so exhausted that I hardly remember the holiday. I told Justin... Summer babies from here on out!

Since our surprise gender baby ended up being a girl, we needed lots of girl things! We made a trip to Amarillo the Saturday after she was born to pick up pajamas, blankets, bows & other girly necessities. It was an exhausting trip for Mama! Once the following week started, we began making calls to start the process of getting her birth certificate and ssn. The local courthouse told us we would need to go to Amarillo to get it so back we went, this time with everyone in tow: Justin & I, Silas, Scarlett and Mimi.

Breastfeeding was hard and I shouldn't have been surprised after having had a hard time starting with Silas too. But after a while, it was a different kind of hard. After doing a little reading online about symptoms of lip and tongue ties, we realized our little Scarlett had both. It was a large part of the reason we were having issues nursing and why she was feeling so bad. Her tongue was being held down and was creating a bad latch causing her to take in excessive air and causing painful gas. We weighed our options and after a few days, decided to call the closest expert on the matter, a dentist in Dallas. We made the plans then made the trip down. Scarlett was just almost 3 weeks & getting lots of travel experience! We drove down Thursday night and her surgery was early Friday morning. It was just as traumatic for me as it was for her! We spent the rest of the morning nursing and doing skin to skin. It took a few days for her to get past the pain and now, just over a week later, she's doing great. I have cut out dairy and after a trip to the chiropractor this last week, she seems to be crying less. Woohoo!

Big brother Silas is really coming into his role as "helper"! He was very hesitant at first and didn't know what to think of the newest member of our family but it didn't take long for him to warm up. He loves giving her kisses and stroking her face, "checking her out" when she's crying and shushing her to comfort her! It is absolutely so precious to watch him fall in love with her too!

Scarlett is just growing away and is so beautiful! Life as a family of four is TOUGH but I wouldn't trade her for the world!
